VIKAS DUBEY: “HE WHO PROFITS BY VILLAINY, HAS PERPRETRATED IT”

Before July 3, 2020, Vikas Dubey was just another underworld criminal from UP. Though he was accused of 60 criminal cases including murder and attempt to murder but still his name was nowhere to be found in the list of most wanted criminals. The hierarchy of his criminal records began back in 1990s when he was a grassroots worker and was patronized by some politicians. He seized land from some and on the other hand freed some land. He had the sarpanch, electric substation and other things of the village under his control. And that was how he was able to gain the support of people. It was also stated that in 2001, he killed a state minister in the police station itself in front of 20 people but nobody witnessed against him. All his wrongdoings came to end when the following series of event took place:

 

3^rd July 2020 (Friday)

On July 3 when the police was on its way to arrest Vikas Dubey because he was accused of abduction by a local resident of Bikru village, Kanpur, was unknown of the fact that his men had taken position on the rooftops in order to attack. The police blocked the road in front of his house and as soon as the policemen stepped out, Dubey’s men opened firing and 8 of the policemen died including a deputy superintendent, 3 sub inspectors and 4 constables. The police vehicles were blocked by an earth mover. He was also heard saying “kill each one of them”. And after this incident he was on the run. Gangster Vikas Dubey used different modes of transport to escape from Kanpur like taxis, an SUV, motorcycles and sand laden trucks.

 
4^th July 2020 (Saturday)

On July 4, police arrested Vikas Dubey’s accountant in Kanpur, as he was accused of helping him vanish from the crime scene. On the same day, the police destroyed and demolished his residence with the same earth mover that was used to block the police vehicles. His vehicles including 2 tractors and 2 SUVs were also broken down. A supervising officer, Vinay Tiwari was suspended on behalf of helping Dubey by telling him about what was going to happen.

 

5^th July 2020 (Sunday)

On July 5, One of Dubey’s men was arrested in Kalyanpur, Kanpur by the UP police. The man confessed that Vikas Dubey got a tip from the police station itself about the raid that was going to happen on 3^rd of July.

 

6^th July 2020 (Monday)

On July 6, two videos from 2006 and 2017 circulated all over social media which highlighted the criminal’s political connections. In one of the videos Dubey addressed the assembly speaker, Hari Krishan Srivastav as his ‘political guru’. In the second video Dubey named some BJP leaders who helped him in clearing his name. Although all of them denied these statements.

 

7^th July 2020 (Tuesday)

On July 7, Vikas Dubey arrived Faridabad. A CCTV footage proved that he was checking into a hotel wearing a black T shirt, jeans and a mask. He did not remove his mask anywhere. It is believed that he wore some padding around his stomach in order to change his appearance.

Dubey was steps ahead of the police. Police discovered his hideouts and his vehicles but only after he had left them or flew away from the place.  

 

8^th July 2020 (Wednesday)

On July 8, Amar Dubey the close associate and bodyguard of Vikas Dubey was encountered by the police as he was accused of having some connection with killing of police personnel on 3^rd of July. Amar Dubey was encountered at Maudaha village in Hamirpur district.

 

9^th July 2020 (Thursday)

On July 9, 2 more men of Vikas Dubey – Kartikeya Prabhat & Praveen Bauwa were also encountered in UP. Dubey had crossed 3 states – Kanpur, Haryana and Rajasthan and was finally arrested in Ujjain. Hours later Dubey’s wife, son and a helper were also arrested. His wife was believed to be supporting him in carrying out activities against the law and also had a hand in planning the killing of policemen.

 
10^th July 2020 (Friday)

On July 10, Vikas Dubey died in an encounter. He was being taken back to Kanpur when a vehicle overturned due to heavy said. Seeing the situation, he snatched a gun and tried to make an escape. The police surrounded him and asked him to surrender to which he retaliated and was shot on the spot in self defense as stated by the Police officials.

 

 

Is our system that flawed to not have put enough attention on a criminal who conducted numerous heinous crimes and so called 60 murders and half murders?

Why wasn’t Vikas Dubey arrested first when he killed a state minister in front of 20 people? Isn’t this a reason enough to know how dangerous can someone be. He was also accused of snatching lands of the poor people. Why couldn’t anybody raise their voice against the wrongdoings. Is this country only democratic for the ones in power? Had he been stopped in the early years and not protected by politicians, this wouldn’t have happened. We have lost 8 of our policemen, and can this be forgotten? If people aren’t scared of the police only, then are we safe?
